I've decided to sign up for 'A Year of Ethical Fashion', which has been launched by Pip Lincolne on her Meet Me At Mikes blog.
Here's the Year of Ethical Fashion (#YOEF) pledge for 2014...
If I'm looking for things to wear I will only:
a) Buy from ethical makers or
b) Buy second-hand or
c) Make it myself or
d) Wear things I already own or
e) Borrow or swap garments with friends
I had been thinking about doing something along these lines myself, but it will be so much more powerful to be part of a group!
If you want to join in, you can sign up here and there is also a facebook group.
People are going to take a variety of different approaches to this. Some folks are planning to do a lot of home dressmaking, but I am more likely to wear things I already own, buy second-hand and buy from ethical makers.
Here is an example of the kind of ethical fashion I tend to wear. This second-hand denim jacket came from a dress agency.
Over the next year, I'll be trying other options for ethical fashion, including ethical knickers, jewellery and fairtrade footwear. I'll be writing about this on my Minibreak Mummy blog.
Here are the ethical fashion blogposts I've written so far:
does this apply to shoes too sis? xx
ReplyDeleteYes - though I have plenty of shoes so should be able to use option 'd) wear things I already own' for the most part xx
DeleteLove this idea! A lot of my clothes are already bought second hand from places like ebay and the odd charity shop find, although I must admit it's more difficult for the larger lady!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly used to be easier to find nice second hand clothes when I was slimmer - perhaps 'larger ladies' are less likely to chuck nice clothes out?
DeleteAh this is such a good idea. I will watch with interest as you progress, and look forward to finding some good advice!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm hoping to find some good advice too!
DeleteSuch a good idea. I already buy most of my clothes from ebay, but I suspect I'm still taking some ethical shortcuts, so I'll watch this with interest.
ReplyDeleteWell done for buying clothes from ebay. I think we all take 'some ethical shortcuts' - I certainly do!
DeleteWhat a great idea - I never buy second hand, but for no reason as I just never think to. Looking fwd to reading more on this....
ReplyDeleteThere are some things that can be great second-hand. For example - posh frocks that may have only been worn once. And you can try dress agencies and ebay if you don't fancy charity shops.
DeleteWow, it sounds so ambitious, I look forward to hearing how you get on :)
ReplyDeleteIt is going to be a challenge, but I'm trying to head in this direction anyway...
DeleteWhat a great idea! I have just started teaching myself sewing. I may take some of these ideas on board.
ReplyDeleteI used to sew my own clothes when I was a student and therefore cash-poor and time-rich. Now I'm a working parent it is harder to make time to sew, but I'm hoping to try to make something simple as part of this challenge.
Deleteinteresting idea! I think I would actually find it quite hard, as I buy a lot from the high st which is maybe not as ethical as it should be
ReplyDeleteI think I'm going to find it quite a challenge not buying clothes from the high street. Some high street stores sell clothing from ethical brands (e.g. People Tree clothes are sold in John Lewis) but it tends to only be a small selection in the larger stores.
DeleteThis is a great idea but I don't know if I could do it! I'll follow your progress with interest.
ReplyDeletethis is such an amazing idea! I think I would find it super hard as I do buy from the high street but I would love to give it a go.. xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great thing to commit to going into a New Year. I look forward to reading and finding out how you get on!
ReplyDeleteA really good initiative :)
