Bedside reading


I thought you might be interested to see the current pile of books on my bedside table. 

Three of the books are recent charity shop finds:
  • Appetite by Nigel Slater - spotted for £4.99 in the Beeston Oxfam Books & Music shop. I'm amazed I didn't already have this in my cookbook collection because I am a big Nigel Slater fan. His books are always very readable, and I'm really enjoying this one.
  • The Bad Mother's Handbook by Kate Long - only 80p in the Treetops Hospice shop on Bramcote Lane. I've previously read Swallowing Grandma by the same author, so I'm really looking forward to reading this.
  • Just My Type by Simon Garfield - £1.50 in the Loughborough British Heart Foundation shop. This is a fascinating cultural history of fonts, with lots of photos showing how different fonts are used and what connotations they have.
The other book I'm currently reading is Angels by Marian Keyes. I read The Mystery of Mercy Close in December and have been inspired to go back and re-read all the other Marian Keyes books featuring the Walsh sisters. I started with Watermelon and recently finished Rachel's Holiday. If anything, these have been even more enjoyable the second time around because I am taking my time and savouring every paragraph.

As well as the books I also have some hand cream, a mug and a magazine on my bedside table. The mug is my favourite Twitter Addict mug from Name Art which is customised with my @nyssapod twittername.

Thanks to RedHead Beauty Diaries for alerting me to the fact that the latest issue of Marie Claire magazine comes with a free Bee Lovely hand cream from Neal's Yard. This cream smells really gorgeous and has a lovely texture, so I will definitely be replacing it when the free one runs out. I've already spotted the mag has a discount code for Neal's Yard, which could be very dangerous...

What reading material do you have on your bedside table? Has any of it come from charity shops?

    I think all my books (with the exception of birthday and Christmas presents) come from charity shops.

    Have you read Toast by Nigel Slater? It's his autobiographical novel, I think you'd enjoy it.

      A lot of my books come from charity shops too - especially now that charity shops have got better at arranging books so that they are easy to browse through.

      I've read Toast - very good but also poignant I thought. I keep meaning to read it again, along with 'Eating for England' which is also good.

    I've never really thought about looking in charity shops for books - must give it a try! I'm also a Marian Keyes fan, I have read all her books several times over!

      Charity shops can be really good for books these days.

      Marian Keyes is one of my favourite authors - I'm really glad she's writing again. Must try out some of her cake recipes too x

    charity shops are great for books, it's also a good way of depositing no longer wanted books :-) I love the mug :-)

      Yes I deposit books I've finished with too :-) In fact I try to take more stuff than I buy.

    Charity shops great for books - and allow me to be more experimental (Warren Buffet is languishing under a pile of magazines and papers - my bedside table is too much of a mess to permit a photograph). Keyes and Slater great for feel-good. I'd like to read the Just my Type too. I loved the Bad Mother's Handbook too, another charity find for me...which makes it sound a bit like I spend a lot of time in charity shops, oh dear...

      Nothing wrong with spending lots of time in charity shops - I do it myself! And as you say, you can be more experimental and buy books in charity shops without it being a disaster if you decide you don't like them - you can always take them back to charity shop for someone else to try.

    I've been reading a charity shop book by Will Self for the past 6 months, not that the book isn't great but I seem to be asleep before I get a change to grab it. The typeface book looks good :)

      I do a lot less reading now I'm a mum and no longer commuting by train. This makes me more inclined to stick to old favourites like Nigel Slater and Marian Keyes rather than try new stuff. But the typeface book is really good - well worth splashing out £1.50 for! :)

    Nice pile! I think I read The Bad Mother's Handbook years ago, but I can't quite remember. My mum certainly has Just My Type - she's a proper anorak for fonts :)

    Happy World Book Day! Charity shops have some great books in them, cheap and usually in good condition too. I recently found a hardback Stephen King book that looked unread, all for £1. Loving your little blog.

      Yes the fonts book is really interesting - I'd never realised that the Beach Boys and EasyJet used the same font!
